Is Your Web Hosting Fast Enough?

If you notice your site loading slowly, or are worried about losing visitors or customers due to slow loading times, there are a few things you can do to troubleshoot the issue.

Large images. Even if they appear small on the actual web page, images can be large in actuality. Right click an image on your site and click "View Image." This will show you how big the image actually is. You may need to "zoom in" by clicking the picture or hovering over it and waiting for a zoom icon to appear, depending on your browser. Is it much larger than the browser window? If so, you may want to replace it with a shrunken version that is the actual size you want.

Dead links. If you have dead links to images or scripts or anything else on your site, the page may hang on trying to download them, waiting for non-existant resources. Remove the broken links or make them point to something that works.

Bad script. If you have Javascript or any other form of browser-embeded programs, you may run into problems with scripts if they are not coded correctly. Check your scripting.

Slow hosting. If your web hosting provider is slow, it will obviously affect your website. To check if this is so, go to Alertra.com and type the URL of your website into the form. This will check the speed of loading all over the world, and show a report of how long it took to load from various locations. A few seconds is OK from places on the opposite side of the world from you, but if it's anything more than that, you may be experiencing a slow web host. Ask your hosting provider if they can help you figure out how to get better speeds, or consider moving to a different host.
